I was somewhat concerned during tonight's discussion that the statementa about "special rights" went unaddressed. I'm not sure that same sex partners want "special rights."

As a lawyer myself, and a scientist, I fully understand, as well as Ms. Fitzgerland, the "protected class" arguments and cases. By the way, it would have been nice to see another lawyer on the panel to address her inaccuracies and overgeneralizations regarding that area of the law. However, I believe this is really about equality, and looking at it as a special situation is going off point.

If all we want is to participate in society in an equal way, then the carrott of "civil unions" is not really going pass muster. We have to have the same and equal rights that are given to others. To classify our position as "special" is false and a gross overstatement, which my sheer definition draws an ire.

I don't want any special rights, which connotes wanting something that others don't have. I want to be equal to others.
